SAMSUNG could be bulking up its next flagship smartphone, according to a new leak.
The size boost means that the hotly rumoured Samsung Galaxy S9 spin-off may have an even bigger screen than Apple’s £999 iPhone X.
Last month, a regulatory filing in China revealed that Samsung was working on a surprise smartphone that hasn’t yet been announced.
The handset is believed to be an upgraded version of the recently launched Samsung Galaxy S9 – featuring more powerful hardware.
Now a top mobile tipster has revealed that the mysterious ‘SM-G8850’ blower could feature a massive 6.3-inch screen. It’s worth noting that Samsung typically reserves ‘SM-G’ model numbers for Galaxy S phones – the flagship handset range.
The current Galaxy S9 only has a 5.8-inch display, and the larger Galaxy S9+ is 6.2 inches.
That means Samsung’s next handset could be much bigger than both the iPhone 8 Plus (5.5 inches) and the pricey iPhone X (5.8 inches).
Phone makers have gradually bumped the size of their phone screens up in recent years.
Most reckon normal users prefer larger displays for watching videos and playing games.
Back in 2012, Samsung’s Galaxy S3 measured just 4.8 inches, while Apple’s iPhone 5 was even smaller at 4 inches.
But phone displays have ballooned since then, and this latest leak suggests the trend isn’t stopping any time soon.
This new leak comes courtesy of Ice Universe, a prominent leaker of mobile industry news.
There’s no way of knowing whether it’s right about the Galaxy S9 spin-off news, but it has a decent track record in any case.
In a tweet, Ice Universe cited a recent report about the new S9 device, which claimed a 5.8-inch screen, and said: “Staff’s mistakes, all parameters regarding it are wrong, it is 6.3 inches.”
The phone is expected to introduce several big improvements compared to the Galaxy S9.
For instance, it’s tipped to feature a new dual-camera setup on the back – which wasn’t offered with the standard Galaxy S9.
It’s also supposed to feature a powerful 2.8GHz Exynos 9810 processor built by Samsung, which could keep pace with Apple’s nippy iPhone X.
But Samsung hasn’t formally announced any such phone, so take all rumours with due caution for now.
